Meganisi Island Holidays Greece

On Meganisi   we offer the choice of two very different types of accommodation: the quiet privacy of the Rose Garden Apartments, nestling in quiet streets amongst the locals - or the company of other visitors at Hotel Meganisi with its good sized swimming pool & bar. Both give you the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful island and mix with its truly friendly inhabitants.

Meganisi Hotel
(Check Price)

The original Meganisi Island hotel is beautifully located on the edge of the village of Katomeri, overlooking the bay of Port Atheni. It is very much an inland hotel on a narrow quiet lane. Katomeri village remains a real village, home to the families that live on the island, with little evidence of the tourism responsible for the new prosperity of the island.

The hotel has its own transport which collects you from the ferry landing at Vathi harbour and, five minutes later, you'll be booking into your room. You'll stay in a beautifully maintained, well-equipped hotel with air-conditioned rooms, en-suite facilities and a good sized quiet swimming pool.

The hotel, run by George and his family, is charmingly informal. Like the island on which it lies, it's relaxed and welcoming, with an excellent restaurant, attractive terraces and both indoor and outdoor bars. The poolside view gives a spectacular vista of the yachts rocking gently at anchor in Atheni Bay - a superb backdrop over which to enjoy a glass of ouzo as you relax in the sun.

If you are feeling energetic, there are spectacular walks through the island's countryside. George will be pleased to point out to you the sun-trapped beaches and other places to visit.

Should you prefer the independence of having a hire car, we can organise one, at preferential rates, to be waiting for you to collect prior to boarding the ferry to the island.

The hotel has a speed boat for daily hire; bookings for the boat must be made at the same time as booking your accommodation.

Rose Garden Taverna Apartments
(Check Price)

Meganisi, Port Vathi provides the setting for the Rose Garden Taverna and its Apartments. Located in one of Vathi's quiet narrow streets on the edge of the village, just a few metres from the harbour and the Rose Garden Taverna. The apartments nestle amongst the locals' homes, allowing you to blend into the community and feel more like a local yourself than a visitor.

The apartments are airy and spacious, offering generous accommodation for up to six people. They are not air conditioned but freshened by the cool air flowing down the hills and through the valley. The apartments give you the independence of a self-catering holiday with the option of strolling along to the Rose Garden Taverna itself when you feel it's someone else's turn to do the cooking, and sample some real Greek home cooked food. In the evening Vathi is far from bustling, but the harbour does come to life as the visiting yachts tie up for the evening. Around the harbour there are just enough tavernas and bars to provide variety of choice and you can always try a meal at Hotel Meganisi or one of the fish restaurants.

Vathi is an ideal base from which to explore the island. You can walk for fifteen minutes or so to Abelike Bay to sunbathe and swim. At Katomeri, Meganisi's principal village, there's an opportunity to mix with the locals and sample a drink at an ouzeri. It's an ideal destination for a gentle thirty-minute walk. The less energetic will appreciate the local bus services - a most attractive option at the end of a hard day's sun worship.

About Meganisi Island
Meganisi is a strange and mystical island lying to the east of the larger island of Lefkas. Its landscape has a stark beauty that will immediately attract those who long to escape from our everyday hurley-burly.

If all the nightclubs and casinos were laid end to end, they'd stretch absolutely nowhere, because there aren't any. What Meganisi does have is local inhabitants who are genuinely friendly and welcoming and a tranquil charm that is quintessentially Greek. There are excellent tavernas, breathtaking walks and quiet beaches, but if you are missing the bustle - there's a ferry to Nidri on Lefkas, or Fiskardo on the Island of Kefallonia.

If you fancy some strenuous legwork, the hill top village of Spartakhori will amply repay your efforts. It's a lazy quietly beautiful settlement with magnificent views over Port Spiglia and the surrounding coastline.
There are beaches at Port Spiglia and Atheni Bay by the lighthouse headland, there is also a quiet swimming beach in Abelike Bay, this has two small tavernas, perfect for lunch and a glass of wine in the shade.

The small village bus is on hand if you'd rather save your legs but the drive through the narrow village streets, you may find interesting, if not stimulating.

You can choose a holiday at Hotel Meganisi or Self Catering at the Rose Garden Taverna Apartments, alternatively take a Sail'n'Stay holiday and enjoy a weeks sailing followed by your island holiday, or a week of dinghy sailing at the Meganisi Dinghy Sailing Centre.
